Break Deduction Calculator
Standard Formula
Net Compensable Time = Total Clocked Span - Unpaid Breaks
Bona fide meal breaks of 30+ minutes where the employee is completely relieved of duty are typically non-compensable under the FLSA.
How Break Deduction Calculator Works?
The Break Deduction Calculator works by subtracting unpaid break minutes from the total clocked shift time, then pricing the net hours at your hourly rate.
1Enter elapsed shift time
Add hours from first punch to last punch, 8.5 by default.
2Enter unpaid break minutes
Add minutes of bona fide meal breaks, 45 by default.
3Enter the hourly rate
Type the base wage, $25.00 by default.
4Read net paid time
8.5 − 0.75 = 7.75 net hours (7h 45m), paying $193.75.
Break Deduction Calculator Formula
The Break Deduction Calculator formula is Net Compensable Time = Total Clocked Span − (Unpaid Break Minutes ÷ 60).
Break in hours
Break Hours = Break Minutes ÷ 60
Net time
Net = Clocked Span − Break Hours
Net pay
Pay = Net × Rate
- Clocked Span
- Hours from shift start to shift end.
- Break Minutes
- Unpaid meal time, at least 30 minutes per break.
- Net
- Paid work hours.
Worked example: 2 unpaid breaks
A 12-hour span with two 30-minute meals = 60 minutes (1.0 hour).
Net = 12 − 1 = 11.0 hours. At $30.00, pay = $330.00 before overtime.

What is Break Deduction Calculator?
A Break Deduction Calculator is a tool that removes unpaid meal time from a shift to find paid work hours.
The FLSA treats 2 break types differently. Rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes are paid work time (29 CFR § 785.18). Bona fide meal periods of 30 minutes or more, with the employee fully relieved of duty, are unpaid (29 CFR § 785.19).
An employer cannot deduct a meal break when the worker eats at the desk while answering phones. That time is work time.
