Daily and Weekly Overtime Calculator Formula
The Daily and Weekly Overtime Calculator formula is Weekly OT = Max(0, Straight Daily Hours − 40), where straight daily hours exclude hours already paid as daily overtime.
Daily overtime
Daily OT = Days × Max(0, Hours per Day − 8)
Straight daily hours
Straight = Days × Min(Hours per Day, 8)
Weekly overtime
Weekly OT = Max(0, Straight − 40)
Total pay
Pay = (Straight − Weekly OT) × Rate + (Daily OT + Weekly OT) × Rate × 1.5
- Daily OT
- Hours over 8 on each workday.
- Straight
- Hours paid at 1.0× before the weekly test.
- Weekly OT
- Straight hours above 40 in the workweek.
Worked example: 6 days × 9 hours at $30
Daily OT = 6 × 1 = 6 hours. Straight = 6 × 8 = 48 hours. Weekly OT = 48 − 40 = 8 hours.
Pay = (40 × $30.00) + (14 × $45.00) = $1,200.00 + $630.00 = $1,830.00.
Total overtime is 14 hours, not 6 + 14 = 20 hours.

What is Daily and Weekly Overtime Calculator?
A Daily and Weekly Overtime Calculator is a payroll tool that applies a daily overtime rule and the weekly 40-hour rule together without double counting.
States with daily rules still require the weekly rule. Under California practice, hours paid as daily overtime are excluded when counting the 40 weekly hours, so the employee receives the greater total without pyramiding.
The tool matters most for 6-day schedules, where daily overtime and weekly overtime both appear in the same week.
