Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator
Standard Formula
Overtime Adjustment = (Nondiscretionary Bonus ÷ Total Hours) × 0.5 × Overtime Hours
Under FLSA, nondiscretionary bonuses (production, retention, safety) must be apportioned into the regular rate for overtime calculations.
How Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator Works?
The Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator works by spreading a nondiscretionary bonus across all hours worked and paying an extra 0.5× of that amount for each overtime hour.
1Enter the base rate
Type the hourly wage, $25.00 by default.
2Enter total hours
Add hours worked in the workweek the bonus covers, 50 by default.
3Enter the bonus
Type the nondiscretionary bonus, $200.00 by default.
4Read the extra overtime
$200.00 ÷ 50 = $4.00 per hour. $4.00 × 0.5 × 10 overtime hours adds $20.00, for $1,595.00 total.
Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator Formula
The Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator formula is Overtime Adjustment = (Bonus ÷ Total Hours) × 0.5 × Overtime Hours.
Bonus per hour
Bonus Rate = Bonus ÷ Total Hours
Adjusted regular rate
Adjusted Rate = Base Rate + Bonus Rate
Extra overtime due
Extra OT = Bonus Rate × 0.5 × OT Hours
Total pay
Total = Base Pay + OT Pay + Bonus + Extra OT
- Bonus
- A nondiscretionary bonus earned in the workweek.
- Total Hours
- All hours worked in that workweek.
- OT Hours
- Hours above 40.
Worked example: $150 safety bonus
Rate $20.00, 45 hours, $150.00 safety bonus.
Bonus Rate = $150.00 ÷ 45 = $3.33. Extra OT = $3.33 × 0.5 × 5 = $8.33.

What is Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator?
A Bonus-Adjusted Overtime Calculator is a tool that recalculates overtime when a nondiscretionary bonus raises the regular rate.
Nondiscretionary bonuses are promised in advance to encourage work: production, attendance, safety, retention and shift-completion bonuses. Under 29 CFR §§ 778.208–778.210, these bonuses belong in the regular rate. Discretionary bonuses, such as an unannounced holiday gift, stay out.
A bonus that covers several weeks is split back across those workweeks. Each workweek then receives its own overtime adjustment.
