Standard Formula

Regular Rate = Total Non-Overtime Compensation ÷ Total Hours Worked

Official FLSA method for calculating the regular rate when non-discretionary payments or multiple wages are involved.

How Weighted Regular Rate Calculator Works?

The Weighted Regular Rate Calculator works by dividing total non-overtime pay for the week by total hours worked. The tool then adds the 0.5× premium for hours over 40.

  1. 1Enter straight-time earnings

Type all pay for the week at straight rates, including shift premiums and nondiscretionary bonuses. $1,200.00 by default.

  2. 2Enter total hours

Add every hour worked in the workweek, 48 by default.

  3. 3Read the regular rate

    $1,200.00 ÷ 48 returns a $25.00 weighted regular rate.

  4. 4Read the premium due

    8 overtime hours × $12.50 adds $100.00, for $1,300.00 total.

Weighted Regular Rate Calculator Formula

The Weighted Regular Rate Calculator formula is Regular Rate = Total Non-Overtime Compensation ÷ Total Hours Worked.

Regular rate

Regular Rate = Straight Pay ÷ Total Hours

Overtime premium

Premium = Regular Rate × 0.5 × OT Hours, where OT Hours = Total Hours − 40

Total earnings

Total = Straight Pay + Premium

Straight Pay
All includable pay for the week, excluding overtime premiums.
Total Hours
All hours worked in the workweek.
Premium
Half-time owed for each overtime hour.

Worked example: base pay plus a shift premium

50 hours at $20.00 = $1,000.00, plus a $60.00 night premium. Straight Pay = $1,060.00.

Regular Rate = $1,060.00 ÷ 50 = $21.20. Premium = $10.60 × 10 = $106.00.

Total = $1,166.00.

What is Weighted Regular Rate Calculator?

A Weighted Regular Rate Calculator is a compliance tool that computes the FLSA regular rate from all includable pay and all hours worked.

The regular rate is not always the hourly wage. Under 29 CFR § 778.109, the regular rate equals total remuneration for the workweek, excluding statutory exclusions, divided by total hours worked.

8 exclusions in Section 7(e) of the FLSA stay out of the regular rate, including discretionary bonuses, gifts, pay for time not worked, and expense reimbursements.

What are the uses of Weighted Regular Rate Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of the Weighted Regular Rate Calculator.

  • Regular rate audits

Employers check that premiums and bonuses are inside the regular rate.

  • Complex paystubs

Workers with several pay codes compute their true overtime rate.

  • Back wage claims

  • Payroll setup

Administrators decide which pay codes feed the regular rate.
