Standard Formula

Double Time Pay = Hourly Rate × 2.0 × Hours

Double time is common for Sunday shifts, major statutory holidays, or work exceeding 12 hours in a single workday.

How Double-Time Pay Calculator Works?

The Double-Time Pay Calculator works by multiplying your hourly rate by 2.0 and then by the double-time hours you worked. The output shows double-time pay, the 2.0× rate, your base rate, and the extra money earned above straight time.

  1. 1Type the regular hourly rate

Enter the base wage before any premium, for example $30.00 per hour.

  2. 2Enter double-time hours

Add only the hours paid at 2.0×, such as hours past 12 in one California workday or hours worked on a contract holiday. Half-hour steps (30 minutes = 0.5) are accepted.

  3. 3Read total double-time pay

The calculator multiplies rate × 2.0 × hours. Eight hours at $30.00 per hour returns $480.00.

  4. 4Review the extra premium

The premium line shows the money earned above straight pay, which equals the base rate × 1.0 × hours.

Double-Time Pay Calculator Formula

The Double-Time Pay Calculator formula is Double-Time Pay = Hourly Rate × 2.0 × Double-Time Hours. Half of that amount is straight pay and the other half is premium.

Double-time rate

Double-Time Rate = Hourly Rate × 2.0

Double-time pay

Double-Time Pay = Double-Time Rate × Double-Time Hours

Premium above straight time

Premium = Hourly Rate × 1.0 × Double-Time Hours

Hourly Rate
Your regular wage per hour before premiums.
2.0
The double-time multiplier (200% of the regular rate).
Double-Time Hours
Hours that qualify for 2.0× under state law, a union contract or company policy.

Worked example: a 14-hour day in California at $27 per hour

California pays 2.0× for hours past 12 in one workday, so 14 − 12 = 2 double-time hours.

Double-Time Rate = $27.00 × 2.0 = $54.00 per hour.

Double-Time Pay = $54.00 × 2 = $108.00, of which $54.00 is premium.

What is Double-Time Pay Calculator?

A Double-Time Pay Calculator is a wage tool that pays each qualifying hour at 200% of the regular hourly rate. One double-time hour equals two straight-time hours of pay.

Federal law does not require double time. The FLSA stops at 1.5× for hours over 40 in a workweek. Double time comes from 3 sources: state law, union collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), and employer policy. California Labor Code Section 510 requires 2.0× for hours over 12 in a workday and for hours over 8 on the seventh consecutive workday of a workweek.

Industries that pay double time often include healthcare, utilities, construction trades, airlines and public safety, where holiday and emergency shifts carry a 2.0× contract rate.
