Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator

Calculated Result
Total Gross Pay$1171.74
Piecework Regular Rate$23.91/hr
Additional OT Half-Time Due$71.74
Overtime Hours Worked6 hrs

Standard Formula

Regular Rate = Total Piecework Pay ÷ Total Hours Worked; OT = Regular Rate × 0.5 × OT Hours

Because piecework pay already covers straight time for all hours worked, only the additional half-rate (0.5×) is owed for overtime.

How Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator Works?

The Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator works by dividing total piecework pay by total hours to find the regular rate, then adding 0.5× that rate for each overtime hour.

  1. 1Enter piecework earnings

Type total piece-rate pay for the workweek, $1,100.00 by default.

  2. 2Enter total hours

Add all hours worked, including non-productive time that is compensable. 46 by default.

  3. 3Read the regular rate

    $1,100.00 ÷ 46 returns $23.91 per hour.

  4. 4Read total pay

    6 overtime hours × $11.96 adds $71.74, for $1,171.74 gross.

Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator Formula

The Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator formula is OT Due = (Piecework Pay ÷ Total Hours) × 0.5 × Overtime Hours.

Regular rate

Regular Rate = Piecework Pay ÷ Total Hours

Half-time due

OT Due = Regular Rate × 0.5 × Max(0, Total Hours − 40)

Gross pay

Gross = Piecework Pay + OT Due

Piecework Pay
Pay earned per unit, crate, mile or job in the workweek.
Total Hours
All hours worked in the workweek.
0.5
Only half-time is owed, since piece pay already covers straight time for every hour.

Worked example: 1,200 units at $0.75

Piecework Pay = 1,200 × $0.75 = $900.00 for 50 hours.

Regular Rate = $18.00. OT Due = $9.00 × 10 = $90.00. Gross = $990.00.

What is Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator?

A Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator is a tool that computes overtime for workers paid by the unit instead of by the hour.

29 CFR § 778.111 sets the method: total piece earnings divided by total hours gives the regular rate, and the employer owes an extra 0.5× that rate for hours over 40. Piece-rate pay is common in agriculture, garment work, trucking (per mile) and home installation.

California requires separate pay for rest periods and other non-productive time for piece-rate workers under Labor Code Section 226.2.

What are the uses of Piece-Rate Overtime Calculator?
