On-Call Pay Calculator
Standard Formula
Total Pay = (On-Call Standby Hours × Standby Rate) + (Called-In Hours × Overtime Rate)
Differentiates between unrestricted waiting standby time and compensable active work callout time.
How On-Call Pay Calculator Works?
The On-Call Pay Calculator works by paying standby hours at a standby rate and active call-in hours at the 1.5× overtime rate, then adding both amounts.
1Enter the regular rate
Type the base wage, $28.00 by default.
2Enter the standby rate
Type the flat hourly on-call rate, $5.00 by default.
3Enter standby and active hours
Add waiting hours (24 by default) and hours actually worked on call (4 by default).
4Read on-call pay
$120.00 standby pay plus $168.00 active pay at $42.00 per hour returns $288.00.
On-Call Pay Calculator Formula
The On-Call Pay Calculator formula is Total = (Standby Hours × Standby Rate) + (Called-In Hours × Rate × 1.5).
Standby pay
Standby Pay = Standby Hours × Standby Rate
Active pay
Active Pay = Called-In Hours × Rate × 1.5
Total
Total = Standby Pay + Active Pay
- Standby Hours
- Hours on call while free to use time for personal purposes.
- Standby Rate
- Flat $/hr paid for availability.
- Called-In Hours
- Hours of active work, which the tool treats as overtime.
Worked example: IT on-call weekend
48 standby hours at $3.00 and 3 active hours at $40.00 base.
Total = $144.00 + (3 × $60.00) = $324.00.

What is On-Call Pay Calculator?
An On-Call Pay Calculator is a tool that combines standby pay and active work pay for employees who carry a pager, phone or on-call schedule.
The FLSA separates 2 cases. "Engaged to wait" time is work time and fully paid (29 CFR § 785.15). "Waiting to be engaged" time at home, where the employee is free to use the time, is not hours worked (29 CFR § 785.17). Standby rates are a voluntary payment for the second case.
Active call-in hours count toward the 40-hour threshold. The calculator uses 1.5× for those hours, which matches weeks where the regular schedule already reached 40 hours.
What are the uses of On-Call Pay Calculator?
