Hourly Rate Paid$60.00/hr

Standard Formula

Anti-pyramiding check: verifies if premiums can be stacked or take the higher of the two.

Under most labor contracts and FLSA rules, premium rates cannot be pyramided (stacked) on top of each other.

How Premium Pay Overlap Calculator Works?

The Premium Pay Overlap Calculator works by applying either the highest single premium (no pyramiding) or both premiums added together (stacking) to hours that qualify for 2 premiums. The tool compares a 1.5× overtime premium with a 2.0× holiday premium.

  1. 1Enter the base rate

    Type the regular wage, $30.00 by default.

  2. 2Enter overlapping hours

    Add hours that are both overtime and holiday hours, 8 by default.

  3. 3Choose the policy

    Enter 2 for "highest only" (anti-pyramiding) or 1 for "stack both".

  4. 4Read total pay

    Highest only pays 2.0× ($480.00). Stacking pays 1.0 + 0.5 + 1.0 = 2.5× ($600.00).

Premium Pay Overlap Calculator Formula

The Premium Pay Overlap Calculator formula is Multiplier = Max(OT Multiplier, Holiday Multiplier) without pyramiding, or Multiplier = 1.0 + OT Premium + Holiday Premium with stacking.

Highest only (no pyramiding)

Multiplier = Max(1.5, 2.0) = 2.0

Stacked premiums

Multiplier = 1.0 + 0.5 + 1.0 = 2.5

Total pay

Pay = Rate × Multiplier × Hours

OT Premium
The 0.5× part of time and a half.
Holiday Premium
The 1.0× part of double-time holiday pay.
Pyramiding
Paying one premium on top of another for the same hour.

Worked example: $22 per hour, 6 overlapping hours

Highest only: $22.00 × 2.0 × 6 = $264.00.

Stacked: $22.00 × 2.5 × 6 = $330.00. The stacking policy costs $66.00 more.

What is Premium Pay Overlap Calculator?

A Premium Pay Overlap Calculator is a tool that resolves pay for hours that qualify for 2 premiums at once, such as an overtime hour worked on a holiday.

The FLSA does not require pyramiding. Under 29 CFR § 778.202 and § 778.203, a qualifying premium paid for holiday, weekend or extra hours can be credited toward overtime owed, so the employer pays the higher rate, not both.

Union contracts decide the outcome for members. Most CBAs include an anti-pyramiding clause, while some contracts stack premiums for specific holidays.

What are the uses of Premium Pay Overlap Calculator?
